Navy as a color came into the fashion scene in the 10th century, it was extremely expensive to produce to due the fact that its rich color came from the indigo plant, Indigofera tinctoria, which was native to India.

This made it more and more so that Navy became the color chosen by royal familes around the world, whereas black was more and more used for codified formal occasions (funerals, drivers’ or servants’ outfits). Navy, meanwhile, endures as a color of authority, luxury and power today.
