The Re-Run Pineapple.

On your shoe, not on your pizza.

Even though peak pineapple season is almost over, we wanted to re-up the use of our classic Piñatex Pineapple material we introduced 4 years ago. This time around we used the newly introduced Re-Run silhouette for the occasion, combining an already GRS-certified (Global Recycle Standard) sneaker with the additional use of Piñatex' pineapple textile. 

The Re-Run was made with the following in mind; make a retro-running silhouette with the unique selling point of it being fully made with recycled materials - hence the name Re-Run. We wanted to keep the shape very retro - a bulky nose and relatively wide toebox together with a fully retro-inspired outsole made from three separate pieces of recycled rubber and EVA.

Piñatex® is made of fibre from the waste leaves of the pineapple plant. These leaves are a by-product from existing pineapple harvest, so the raw material requires no additional environmental resources to produce. After pineapple harvest, the suitable plant leaves which are left behind are collected in bundles and the long fibres are extracted using semi-automatic machines. The fibres are washed then dried naturally by the sun, or during the rainy season in drying ovens. The dry fibres go through a purification process to remove any impurities which results in a fluff-like material. The textile is then coloured using GOTS certified pigments and a resin top coating is applied to give additional strength, durability and water resistance.
