SUSTAINABILITY

This page will give some body to our sustainability claims. Each and every of our own products on this website contains certain icons claiming certain sustainable features. This page is here to explain what those mean.

Global Recycled Standard

The Global Recycled Standard is a standard that verifies the presence and amount of recycled content in fabrics and tracks the flow of raw materials from source to finished product. It is an international, voluntary, full product standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices and chemical restrictions. GRS certification applies only to fabrics containing more than 50 percent recycled fiber. For Mercer,

we source both textiles and certain leathers that have been recycled using the GRS method.

PETA approved VEGAN

Products with the PETA-Approved Vegan label must be completely animal product free: that means that no animal substances may be used in production. The product is cruelty free.

Piñatex

Piñatex is a non-biodegradable leather alternative made from cellulose fibres extracted from pineapple leaves. Piña- tex® is created by felting the long fibres from pineapple leaves together to create a non-woven substrate. Fibres from

the pineapple leaves are decorticated, washed and hung to dry in the Phil- lipines. For the farming communities selling the pineapple leaves as a byprod- uct helps stimulate the local businesses as well.Te

Leather Working Group

Leather Working Group (LWG) is a not-for-profit membership organiza- tion, working to creating meaning- ful change across the global leather supply chain. Our community in- cludes actors from all parts of the leather supply chain, representing all industries where leather is used. The Leather Working Group has a strong focus on tanneries and improving their environmental impact. The LWG auditing process includes hundreds of questions which do reduce the nega- tive impacts of tanning.

SEAQUAL

SEAQUAL is high quality recycled polyester yarn made from 100% recycled materials including post consumer plastic bottles and plastic captured from the sea, thats why it contributes to preserving natural resources and reducing the waste in the planet’s water.

BSCI

BSCI stands for Business Social Compliance Initiative and aims

to improve and monitor working conditions. This includes the following: the right to form a union, safe working conditions and no forced or child labor. All of our factories are BSCI certified.

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 provides requirements with guidance for use that relate to environmental systems. Other stand- ards in the family focus on specific approaches such as audits, communi- cations, labelling and life cycle analy- sis, as well as environmental challeng- es such as climate change.

Bluesign

The bluesign® technologies group is involved at every step in the supply chain—from chemical formulation to finished product—to keep chemicals of concern out of the process. The group works with factories and brands to impact the following areas:

Resource use: By consulting with them about better chemicals and manufacturing processes, bluesign® helps factories operate more efficiently, which reduces overall water, energy and chemical use.

Occupational health and safety: By working with manufacturers to eliminate hazardous chemicals and to put in place safety features like ventilation systems, bluesign® helps protect workers from exposure to chemicals.

Water and air emissions: bluesign®-approved factories must meet stringent standards for pollution control.

Consumer safety: The bluesign® system also features the world’s strictest chemical safety requirements for textiles.
